My Favourite Things -Hair and Skincare

Welcome to my favourite things. I figured I would take you through all of my favourite skin, hair, and make-up products. First up, hair and skincare.

  1. Shea Moisture African Black Mud Clarifying Mask – I have a hard time being impressed with face masks, but I keep trying. I’ve heard good things about this one and holy shit it was great. I noticed a great improvement in my skin by the next morning.
  2.  Aveeno Clear Complexion Face Moisturizer – I get super oily, but I don’t want to ignore any dry patches. This moisturiser has been perfect for me. It doesn’t have any oil, and it helps to clear breakouts.
  3. Hask Macadamia Oil Moisturizing Deep Conditioner – These hair masks have done wonders for my hair. Since I lighten it, it tends to get a bit dry. I use this mask about once a week to breathe life into my hair. One package lasts foreverrrrrrr.
  4. Clean & Clear Deep Cleaning Astringent – This is one of my OG products. I’ve been using it since high school and haven’t come into any reason why I should stop. I’ve been tempted by the Micellar water trend, but I can’t stray from my old reliable.
  5. John Frieda Go Blonder Lightening Spray – Hi, my name is Haley and I’m a natural brunette. This spray is what helps me stay blonde. I LOVE IT.
  6. Alba Botanica Face & Body Scrub – I’ve been using this scrub for years now, it’s great. The only problem is I have yet to find it in Canada.
  7.  Sarah’s Soaps in Facial Philter – I forgot to add this one into the picture. I bought this at a handmade market before Christmas and have been using it every day since. I love this soap, it leaves my face squeaky clean – and better yet it’s locally made and all natural.

Your New Bachelorette is…

Rachel Lindsay

rachel pic

I am of two minds about this.

First Mind

I am VERY excited they picked Rachel. It’s nothing to sniff at that she will be the first black lead on this franchise. IN 33 SEASONS. It’s frankly absurd it hasn’t happened yet, but we’re here now. Rachel is a 30-y-o lawyer from Texas. She is smart, beautiful, elegant, well-spoken, great, wonderful, etc etc etc etc etc etc. She’s a fantastic choice for a lead, and I am very much looking forward to seeing her ‘journey’.

Second Mind

Rachel has not yet been sent home from this CURRENT season that she is CURRENTLY on, effectively spoiling the season. I would not put it past anyone here that Rachel is in the final two. Hopefully, this isn’t the case, but you never effing know. I mean, they spoiled the ending of Bachelor in Paradise with announcing Nick as the next Bachelor. They almost always announce the next Bachelorette on the After the Final Rose Special, so why didn’t they just do that? Or even the Women Tell All? Or if they’re really desperate, WHY NOT JUST WAIT UNTIL SHE GOES HOME.

Some reasons could be:

  • They need a different range of people to apply for the show
  • Spoilers were coming out, and they wanted to get ahead of the chatter
  • Or, as it was eloquently stated to me on Twitter

So anyway, I’m excited but like, also annoyed. Which I think is just my resting state. Anyway, check out the podcast and follow me on Twitter for Bachelor mild takes.

Under the Cuban Sun

I was desperate for a little sun and sea. My boyfriend and I booked a trip to Cuba looking for just those things. We stayed in the resort mecca of Varaderro, which has the best beaches in Cuba and some of the best in the world. We stayed at the Mecure Playa De Oro, which we very much enjoyed.

We got what we were looking for, a sunburn that turned into a tan, strong drinks, and a whoooole lot of relaxing. We went into Varadero town a couple times where there are a ton of shops, restaurants, and markets.

I understand that a resort stint doesn’t provide the most authentic experience of the country, if you’re looking for something more like that, plan your own excursions, visit restaurants, talk to locals, and maybe avoid all-inclusives.

I had a great time and would absolutely recommend Cuba and Varadero for anyone looking to get away on a budget.

Influenster BITE Box – The Lip Pencil

Once again, Influenster was kind enough to include me in their latest campaign with BITE Beauty, introducing their new lip liner pencils.

I was super excited to be sent one of these voxboxes complimentary for review, I love BITE, lip colours, and being included in things.

I wouldn’t call myself a lip liner aficionado, I very rarely use it. If I’m worried about my lipstick moving or whatever you use lip liner for, I use NYX’s wonder pencil – I find it more versatile than your typical lip liner because you can use it with any colour, not just one that matches.

The idea behind the lip pencil is that they are inspired by natural lip colours, and will pair with many of the amuse bouche lipsticks. They’re meant to be creamy, thanks to being infused with shea butter, for a smooth, easy glide on the lips with no tugging.

Influenster sent 2 lip liners, in 020 and 044, 2 amuse bouche lipsticks, in Honeycomb and Whiskey, and a Sephora Eco Sharpener (it’s almost as if they knew the only sharpener I own I bought at the dollar store in grade 9).

The colours sent were perfect, I love being able to try out a really light nude and a bold, dark colour because some companies are able to nail one and not the other. I think BITE has proved time and time again with all of their products that they can nail pretty much any colour they set their mind to.

The lip liners are fine, I don’t think I’m the best judge of these because I don’t really reach for lip liners, but they are nice and smooth and can be used as a base for the lipsticks or as just a liner. I think these colours will also work well with some of the other lipsticks I have in my collection.

Unsurprisingly, the amuse bouche lipsticks are wonderful and flawless and smooth and creamy and pigmented and perfect. You should own at least one of these lipsticks.

If you’d like to see my post on the last BITE box, you can find it here. If you’d like to join Influenster for yourself, maybe use my link? Thanks love you.

Is Corinne Even a Good Villain?

Like I know we don’t like her that much. I know the girls in the house aren’t dying to give her a bff necklace, but is she really a good villain?

I know we’re supposed to buy her as the villain, that’s clear. I’m sure that her Twitter mentions can back this up.

Here’s the thing, I think being a solid reality television villain requires some semblance of self-awareness. Russell Hantz knew he was a villain. Evel Dick knew he was a villain. If you’re looking for an example closer to home, let’s look at Chad Johnson and Courtney Robertson. All of these people had an idea that, even though they were the hero of their own story, they probably wouldn’t be portrayed that way on television.

Some even TRY to be the villain (hi Chad). I think that Corinne falls into a different category of bachelor villains, one that tends to be reserved for the women of the show.

A question was posed to us on the podcast this week about the female villains and how they rarely return on the show. We haven’t seen a return trip from Courtney, Kelsey, or Olivia. I doubt we will. I think that Kelsey and Olivia were blindsided by their villainess. I don’t think they were self-aware about how their story was going to be presented to the audience.

Which brings me back to Corinne. I don’t think Corinne was aware of how she may be presented. And it doesn’t seem like Corinne is particularly cruel to the other women, or that they deeply despise her like we’ve seen in the past. They’re just annoyed with her. We aren’t really seeing her talk shit about the other women. She’s too busy being focused on herself.

Which is why she’s the villain here. She’s so focused on her relationship with nick and how she’s not afraid to do whatever she can to get what she wants – because she’s used to getting what she wants. She’s young, she’s sheltered, etc.

Sure she’s annoying and it’s difficult to believe she’s a real person, but I don’t think she’s a true reality villain.

Nick is Going to be a Great Bachelor

A new year is here, and that means a new season of The Bachelor is just around the corner. This season is sure to be an interesting season, thanks almost exclusively to the choice of the lead, Nick Viall.

TWO! MORE! WEEKS! #thebachelor

A post shared by Nick Viall (@nickviall) on

This was surely not a popular pick. Nick was not beloved on his two stints on The Bachelorette and the producers had a slam-dunk-middle-America-will-love-him pick in Luke Pell, the fourth-place contestant on Jojo’s season. Luke even had the plane ticket to go to LA for his leading role. But here’s the thing, Luke would have been terrible and Nick is going to be amazing. Here’s why.

While on Bachelor in Paradise, he proved he could be a likeable character, contrary to popular belief. We enjoyed watching him fall for Jenn, become friends with the twins, and attempt to fill Amanda in on what a douche canoe Josh is (RIP Amandosh 2016-2016). He changed the opinion of himself in the eyes of a lot of the audience. He turned us all into believiallers.

Nick has been here before, and he’ll act like it. Two season of The Bachelorette and a stint in Paradise means that Nick understands that this is a television show. This may be a detractor for many people, but because of his experience (in more ways than one,) it means he knows how to make compelling television. Which is truly what we are here for.  Nick is a smart cookie, he’ll do what it takes to make this entertaining.

But the best thing about Nick is that we’ve never had a Bachelor quite like him before. That’s a good thing. You may love your Ben Higgins, Chris Soules, and Sean Lowe, but you can not tell me they are great television characters. But Nick is, and has been since his first run at this whole ‘finding love on TV’ thing. He’s a bolder, brighter star than we’ve seen before, and I personally cannot wait to watch him.

For my opinions on the ladies vying for Viall’s love, check out the season preview podcast where we’re joined once again by Big Brother Canada’s Jordan Parhar. As always, you can tweet along with me every Monday night – @hstrong_

Sephora Gimme Some Bold Lip Set

I keep telling myself I have too much lipstick and that I need to stop. Or at least get a nude lip product every once in a while. Luckily, I have a best friend who throws my cautions to the wind and got me this set from Sephora. I’ve seen these sets in the past, but never with the bold colours which are much more up my alley.

The set is a great mix of liquid lipsticks and regular ones, super out there colours and everyday bolds.

Ciate London’s Liquid Velvet in Head Over Heels

This was my surprise favourite of the set. When I first saw there was a Ciate product in the bunch I was a little apprehensive, I mean, this is a brand known for nail polish after all. My concerns were futile as this lippy was creamy, pigmented, and GORGEOUS beyond belief.

Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Colour in An Affair

Laura Mercier’s offering to the set is a pretty deep plum classic satin lipstick. It’s the perfect colour to wear to work that mixes a bold, beautiful lip without scaring any of your coworkers. It’s hydrating and lovely.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Damned

This is probably the lippy that I was most looking forward to in the set. I have the Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in L.U.V and it’s probably one of my favourites that I own. As to be expected with a liquid lipstick, this bad boy isn’t going to be an oasis of moisture and hydration for your lips. It is long-lasting, but I find since the colour is so dark, touch ups are necessary throughout the day.

Sephora Rouge Cream in Belly-Dancing

Belly-Dancing is a cranberry red. It’s a pretty, flattering colour with a formula that I dig. I wish that they would have included an orangey colour in the set like We Have to Talk or Stolen Kiss just to have a little more variation in the set. This is the most affordable lipstick if you’re looking for the full size.

Tarte Tarteist Creamy Matte Lip Paint in Yaassss

Me when I saw this one was in the set.

I love this colour, and I’ve been dying to try the Creamy Lip Paint for eons. It didn’t disappoint. The colour is gorgey porgey and not quite as electric on the face, making it fairly wearable for every day. The formula is not overly drying, which is not always the case for a liquid lipstick that promises a matte finish.

Bite Beauty Matte Creme Lip Crayon in Aubergine

I juuuust wrote about the Creme Lip Crayons in my last post! I like the formula on these a lot, although they aren’t as long-lasting as I want (approx. 5 years). I wish the colour leaned more purple, but regardless, I’m happy to have this one in my arsenal.
